I find inspiration for my
books in all sorts of places - from articles I read in newspapers, and from
things that happen to people I know, and often from feelings or experiences
that have affected me in some way. I think it's important, for the kind of books
I write, that the stories come from 'real' places, things that readers can
identify with, and share.
· WHERE DO YOU
USUALLY WRITE?
I usually write in my study at
home, but right now I'm actually at my parents' house by the seaside, as I've
got a tight deadlines and I needed to get away from all distractions! When I'm
planning out a novel, I like to work in cafes, and often end up eavesdropping
on the conversations for inspiration.
·HOW LONG DID
IT TAKE TO WRITE LOST DOGS & LONELY HEART?
It took me about 6 months to
write Lost Dogs & Lonely Hearts; I had a very clear vision of the different
characters and the way their stories would unfold. Once i got going, the pages
flew by. I'd also just adopted a dog myself, so all the 'first time owner'
problems Rachel, Natalie and Zoe experience were extremely easy to describe.
Violet, my own basset hound, for instance, used to cry just like Bertie for the
first few nights I had her, but I'm afraid I was strict and haven't let her
sleep in my bed! (She snores.)

IT’S A VERY SAD SUBJECT AND WHY DID YOU THOUGHT TO WRITE A BOOK TALKING ABOUT
VOLOUNTEERS AND A KENNEL?
I would like to say A VERY BIG
THANK YOU to all volunteers who work in rescue shelters. I thank you do an
AMAZING AND WONDERFUL AND VITAL JOB. It broke my heart, doing the research for
the book, because I had no idea just how many dogs end up without a home, often
through no fault of their own. (I don't believe in 'bad dogs', just 'bad
owners' who don't teach their dogs the right way to behave.)
·HAVE YOU EVER
OWNED A DOG FROM THE KENNEL?
I've only had a dog myself for
5 years, but Violet changed my life - owning a dog is a huge commitment but one
which brings unconditional love and joy to human lives. I always urge my
friends to think about rescue dogs, instead of a puppy, and if I lived in a
castle, it would be filled with ex-racing greyhounds! They're such beautiful
creatures; the dog in my new book is a greyhound, and I would recommend them to
anyone thinking of adopting a dog - greys are gentle, adaptable, and are happy
with a couple of 30min trots each day.
· DO YOU THINK
IT WOULD TAKE FOR TOUGHER PENALTIES FOR THOSE WHO MISTREAT ANIMALS?
And, yes, I do think there
should be very very very severe penalties for people who abuse animals.

ISPIRAZIONE PER I SUOI LIBRI?
Trovo ispirazione per i miei
libri da ogni contesto, dagli articoli che leggo sui quotidiani, dalle vicende
che accadono alle persone che conosco, spesso dai miei sentimenti o da
esperienze vissute in prima persona in un modo o nell’altro. Credo sia
importante, considerando il genere di libri che scrivo, che le storie nascano
da posti reali, nei quali i lettori possono identificarsi e che possono
condividere.
·DOVE SCRIVE
DI SOLITO?
Di solito a casa, nel mio
studio, ma attualmente sono a casa dei miei genitori, al mare, ho infatti delle
scadenze molto ravvicinate e devo isolarmi da ogni tipo di distrazione! Quando
sto progettando un racconto nuovo, mi piace lavorare nei bar e spesso
intercettare parti di conversazioni dalle quali trarre ispirazione.
·QUANTO TEMPO
CI HA IMPIEGATO PER SCRIVERE “IL RIFUGIO DEI CUORI SOLITARI”?
Circa 6 mesi; ho avuto una
visione chiara dei personaggi, dei loro caratteri e il modo in cui le loro
storie si sarebbero svolte fin da subito. Una volta cominciato a scrivere, le
pagine hanno iniziato a susseguirsisenza problemi. Ho appena adottato un cane,
quindi i problemi iniziali legati ad un’adozione, come per Rachel, Natalie e
Zoe, sono state estremamente facili da descrivere. Violet il mio basset hound,
per esempio, piangeva come Bertie durante le prime notti, ma sono stata severa
e non le ho permesso di dormire nel mio letto (russa).
·IN MOLTI CASI
QUESTE SITUAZIONI SONO MOLTO TRISTI, PERCHE’ HA DECISO DI SCRIVERE UNA STORIA
CHE PARLA DI VOLONTARI E DI UN CANILE?
Vorrei ringraziare tutti i
volontari che lavorano nei rifugi per randagi. Li ringrazio perché svolgono un
lavoro incredibile e meraviglioso e vitale. Mi ha spezzato il cuore fare le
ricerche per il mio libro, perché non avevo idea di quanti cani ci sono senza
una casa, spesso non per colpa loro. (Non credo in cani cattivi ma in
“proprietari-padroni” cattivi, che non insegnano ai loro cani il modo giusto di
comportarsi).
·HA MAI
ADOTTATO UN CANE ABBANDONATO DI UN CANILE?
Ho avuto un cane per 5 anni,
ma Violet ha cambiato la mia vita – possedere un cane è un grande impegno, ma
che porta amore incondizionato e gioia alla nostra vita da umani. Io esorto
sempre i miei amici per adottare un cane di un canile anziché un cucciolo, e se
vivessi in un castello sarebbe colmo di ex levrieri da corsa! Sono delle
creature bellissime; il cane protagonista del mio prossimo libro è un levriero.
Li consiglio a chiunque stia pensando di adottare un cane– sono gentili, si
adattano facilmente e sono felici con un paio di trotterellate di circa 30
minuti ogni giorno.
·CREDE CHE CI
VORREBBERO PENE MOLTO PIU’ SEVERE PER CHI MALTRATTA GLI ANIMALI?
Si, penso fermamente che siano
necessarie pene molto più severe per chi maltratta gli animali.
